601 Vigilance Committee to Donate $2,000
to Help Honor War Heroes
Virginia City, NV — March 2026 — Each year, the town of Virginia City honors United States veterans through a longstanding tradition of displaying patriotic banners along historic C Street. Beginning two weeks prior to Memorial Day and continuing through Veterans Day, banners are hung on lamp posts throughout town, each featuring the name, rank, branch of service, and photograph of an American war hero.
Fallen service members are recognized with “K.I.A.” designations placed in the center of town, while other veterans are honored as “American Heroes” and displayed along the remaining sections of C Street.
The banner program was originally started by Greg and Brenda Bolander in remembrance of their son, who was killed in action during the Iraq War. Since then, the program has grown to honor more than 200 veterans, including service members from surrounding communities. The program is currently managed by Philip and Diane Greaves.
Now entering its tenth year, many of the banners are showing significant wear due to Virginia City’s harsh weather conditions and are in need of replacement.
The 601 Vigilance Committee, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has stepped forward to continue its support by pledging $2,000 toward the replacement and production of new banners, doubling its contribution from the previous year.
Hunter Hampton, Trail Boss of the 601 Vigilance Committee, said the banner program is “one of our favorite traditions honoring our American heroes locally and reflects the core values of the 601. This program provides us with an opportunity to do exactly that.”
The 601 Vigilance Committee is a community service organization dedicated to preserving Comstock heritage, cowboy traditions, Nevada’s wild horses, and promoting gun safety through grants, donations, and scholarships throughout the Comstock region. Since 2014, the 601 has donated more than $50,000 to support local heritage programs, youth arts, and community initiatives.
